Housing

Rent brake: where do Germany’s seven parties stand?

The statement in the quiz

Rents for new tenancies should stay limited by law under the rent brake (Mietpreisbremse).

Background

In areas with a tight housing market, as designated by each state, the rent for a new tenancy generally may not be more than 10% above the local reference rent. In June 2025 the Bundestag extended the rule to the end of 2029.

Positions are coded on five steps: for, leaning for, neutral or mixed, leaning against, against. A party whose manifesto says nothing on the statement is marked “not in manifesto”, and the quiz leaves the statement out of that party’s score. The coding method and its checks are on the method page.
