Skilled immigration: where do Germany’s seven parties stand?

The statement in the quiz

Germany should make it easier for skilled workers from outside the EU to come and work here.

Background

Easier could mean, for example, faster visas and simpler recognition of foreign degrees and professional qualifications. The current routes include the EU Blue Card and the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte), introduced in 2024. In 2026 the Blue Card salary threshold is €50,700 a year, or €45,934.20 for shortage occupations and recent graduates.

BSW BSW (Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance)

Leaning against

Wants to train young people in Germany first and not rely mainly on recruiting skilled workers from abroad, which it says drains talent from their home countries.

From the manifesto „Statt primär auf die Anwerbung ausländischer Fachkräfte zu setzen und damit die Abwanderung qualifizierten Personals aus ihren Heimatländern zu fördern, wollen wir in erster Linie junge Menschen in Deutschland qualifizieren und ausbilden“

FDP Free Democratic Party

For

Wants to make immigration easier still for highly skilled workers and open the Blue Card to skilled workers without a university degree.

From the manifesto „Hochqualifizierten Fachkräften wollen wir die Einwanderung in den Arbeitsmarkt weiter erleichtern.“

Positions are coded on five steps: for, leaning for, neutral or mixed, leaning against, against. A party whose manifesto says nothing on the statement is marked “not in manifesto”, and the quiz leaves the statement out of that party’s score. The coding method and its checks are on the method page.
