China policy

Less dependence on China: where do Germany’s seven parties stand?

The statement in the quiz

Germany should reduce its economic dependence on China.

Background

In 2023 the German government adopted a China Strategy that describes China as partner, competitor and systemic rival, with reducing risk (de-risking) as its guiding principle. In its answer to a parliamentary question in August 2026, the government kept to the same line.

Positions are coded on five steps: for, leaning for, neutral or mixed, leaning against, against. A party whose manifesto says nothing on the statement is marked “not in manifesto”, and the quiz leaves the statement out of that party’s score. The coding method and its checks are on the method page.
