Resuming Russian gas: where do Germany’s seven parties stand?
The statement in the quiz
Germany should start buying natural gas from Russia again.
Background
In summer 2022 Russia cut gas deliveries through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline step by step and stopped them at the end of August; in September the pipeline was damaged. Since then Germany has not imported Russian pipeline gas directly. In January 2026 the EU adopted a stepwise ban: Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be banned completely from early 2027, and pipeline gas from autumn 2027.
Wants to negotiate with Russia to buy cheap gas again through the remaining Nord Stream pipeline.
From the manifesto „Die Bundesregierung sollte mit Russland verhandeln, um über den verbliebenen Strang der Nord-Stream-Pipeline wieder günstiges Erdgas zu beziehen.“
Positions are coded on five steps: for, leaning for, neutral or mixed, leaning against, against. A party whose manifesto says nothing on the statement is marked “not in manifesto”, and the quiz leaves the statement out of that party’s score. The coding method and its checks are on the method page.
